Ack sorry for missing last week! I'll try to stay on track and get some buffers done.
You guys want to know a secret?
Headcrabs actually terrify me. In fact, all parasitic aliens freak the hell out of me. The Halo flood levels gave me nightmares. The movie Alien gave me nightmares. HALF LIFE 1 GAVE ME NIGHTMARES. So headcrabs, even though they are neat and I like them, they still scare the crap out of me when I run into them in game. You know Cracked listed Poison headcrabs as #2 in the most terrifying videogame enemies of all time? And it's for a damn good reason too.
And also, it's easy to sound brave when you actually don't have to fight anything. I'm going to admit it right now that I cut and run more than I stand to fight XD
For this installment of Webcomic of the week, please take a look at [ Hark! A Vagrant! ] It's so nerdy, and it's just....it's just wonderful. If you guys are into things like history and books, you'd probably appreciate this comic. I really look up to Kate Beaton and her work, so go check it out!
Now for a question for you my awesome readers. Headcrabs, the Flood, and the L4D special infected have all given me nightmares at some point. Has a video game baddie ever given you a nightmare? And if so, what was it? For an example, Sluggy really hates the shadow spider/hands in the Forest Temple in Zelda: OoT. The ones that drop down form the ceiling and kill you if you stay still too long. D:

I can't say things have given me nightmares like that.
The only nightmare I ever had was about this wierd purple and pink worm thing eating everyone. And it was called the Great White Abdominal.
I don't dream that often.

From L4D 1&2.
They are some scary mother flippers, especially when they have you cornered with all your teammates dead :/
November 13th, 2010, 5:51 am
Oh god those hands from OOT... And the ones in Wind Waker that come from a shadow in the floor, though they're not as scary.
And definitely the Flood, but only in Halo 1.In the other Halo games they didn't seem so scary...

I had to wait untill the next day to play Ravenholm... It was night D:
Also poison headcrabs give me the freaking creeps...
Didn't have any nightmares though, but if you played Fallout 3 you'll know it's freaking scary to go to the Dunwitch Building, it was for me. Now with New Vegas I also have creeps going into this deserted, radioactive town south...
Plus I had a dream of having to survive zombie hordes in the desert after watching the Walking dead while playing New Vegas...
tl;dr: Fallout 3's Dunwitch building and Fallout NV's camp searchlight give me the freaking creeps, plus I once had a mixture of the Walking dead plus New Vegas dream... and Poison Headcrabs are scary as fuck...
November 13th, 2010, 8:05 am
The level on Halo 3, Cortana...
So many flood... so many deaths... so many Flood's... *shivers*

Anything involving a headcrab in HL has scared the crap outta me. I've still not gotten past the first headcrab area in HL2, and when I play it in Synergy, let's just say there's a lot of suiciding and not having a headset on-ing.
EDIT: @Zera - Camp Searchlight made me less scared and more aggrivated because the first time I went there I had to reset about 7 times. However I will say that there will always be 1 creature in the Fallout series that scares the crap outta me- Radscorpions. Their unnatural clicking noise they make when they walk, and their overall hideous appearance and, in New Vegas, their tendancy to travel in packs. DX
A close second in Fallout would be Cazadores- they just look unnatural.

Deathclaws from Fallout 3. Espeacialy on the "Shock Value" mission on Broken Steel DLC. You have to go through what is basicaly a deathclaw breeding ground with no radar, and no real weapons. Was tired while doing it at like 2.00 am in the morning and screaming every so often when I lost half my health for no reason...

Abandon all sense of obligation and confidence at the first sight of headcrabs?
You and I play in a very similar style.

Years ago, in like 1998 I played a game on my 75hz PC that was sort of D&D, and all the graphics were 'tiles'. So at one point I was surround by Bears, all represented by graphics that were probably about 64x64 pixels in size. I didn't even take much notice of them at the time.
That night, I had a scarifying nightmare in which I was standing on my kitchen counter surrounded by hardcore, snarling bears in full furry 3D. If I come down, they gonna eat me!!
So yeah - bears!

I think only a couple of video game enemies have given me nightmares. And only one of them could be considered an actual enemy. XD
First one was in this WinFrotz text adventure called "The Theater", there was some large thuggish fellow standing about. I wasn't quite sure how to get past him, so I tried hitting him. Then I got told that he grabbed me and slit my throat. Yep. XD
The other one, which isn't really an enemy, is "Uboa" from Yume Nikki. There's this house with a girl looking about the same age as the main character inside. The only things you can do in there are stab the girl, and flip a lightswitch next to the door. There's a 1-in-64 chance that when you turn the lights off, the girl will turn into some weird distorted creepy face, known as Uboa. And if you touch him... Eep! D:

When I played the Demo of Limbo, I got to the part with the giant spider...
I have arachnophobia something fierce...
That was my nightmare that night...

I don't think I've ever actually had a literal nightmare in my sleep, but some things just scare me silly. Playing through Half-life 1 without cheats for the first time, The flood in general in Halo CE and especially the library, the fact that in CE they got back up randomly after you killed them made them just horrendous. There was my first time in Ravenholme, I LOATHE fast and poison zombies, especially together. The only thing that redeemed Ravenholme was Father Grigori, it's a shame Valve said they weren't using him again. It would be well worth the wait for episode or half-life 3 if he came back. Turning a corner in fallout 3 to literally see a Centaur standing one pixel in front of me, I hit the vats button and jumped out of my chair so fast I almost hit the ceiling. There probably plenty more but I can't remember right now, I'm a huge pansy when it comes to being scared.

I actually have this game called 101 Dalmations(for the dreamcast, AND I got it when I was a kid), made from the movie, and it's actually a great game. BUT THE ENEMIES. Okay, they're not that scary at all, but they are toys. All of them. The helicopters and planes can divebomb you, there are remote-controlled cars that are trying to run your puppy over, there are clown toys TRYING TO SHOOT YOU, there are toy alligators in the water that lunge at you if you get too close, and don't even get me STARTED on the jack-in-the-boxes..... Hell, Cruella is capturing all the puppies and planning to kill them by encasing them in resin! It's a freakin' horror game. For kids. That I had nightmares about. When I was a kid.
November 14th, 2010, 1:48 am
I don't ever really get nightmares about video games, I most video games nowadays (like Dead Space) just startle you with monsters that jump up an go boogaloo before you blast their limbs off with the zombie masher 5000. But a really scary game for me would probably be Penumbra. The first time I played it I kept freaking myself out waiting for an enemy to pop out of nowhere and bite my nipples off, and I got so freaked out when a giant worm ate me. :(. Though I must admit the fast headcrabs give me the creeps, they're just so silent and spidery-ish. The headcrab zombies make me jump out of my chair when they just show up behind you tearing out your guts.

oh yeah, and when I first played Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.
I was like 8 and in like the fifth level you are expected to jump from peices scattered around a desert, without knowing if you can make it to the other side. You also had to time everything perfectly, especialy if you were sprinting across the sand to get somewhere.
The Giant worm underneith was...

The thing that scares the shit out of me EVERYTIME, is playing Minecraft, exploring a cave, hearing footsteps, growling, then seeing it. Creeper. And that last second before you die when you franticly trie to scramble up the wall it has your cornered against and your last thought before it explodes is "FUCK"

I would have to say when I was little I would get terrified of Voldemort after playing the computer game spinoff of the first book. I would have nightmare of Voldemort's face growing out of the back of my head.

I know right those sand burrowers in jedi knight 3 jedi academy freacked me out. to this day I haven't finished it
:(. but my 8-year-old brother has... anyway, the first level with flood in it in halo 1 also scared me. it took me FOREVER to get through it cause i would keep getting scared and quitting. it got alot better at the end when i came upon the marines with shotguns! anyway, in video games its more about paranoia than the surprise. I'm actually relieved when i get eaten...
November 15th, 2010, 11:44 am
@ToonTom: Let me give you a hint. Super speed and thermal detonators work wonders, you just have to know where the worm actually is. You can tell, it's difficult, from looking at the top of the sand.

I don't get scared of too many video games anymore but I do know a few that scared the crap out of me as a kid. Resident evil, walking down that hall with floral wallpaper and windows to your right. Not only did the silence make it eerie but the angles your character had to walk added to the uncomfortable mood. When my very first zombie dog broke the window and charged at me, I froze. I jumped out of my seat in terror and had to turn on the light for the longest time.
Another game was silent hill, going through a misty/foggy town and hearing noises that messed with your head was on a whole other level of terror.
Surprisingly even though its my favorite series (until recently), seeing that snake impaled on a tree by Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 scared me. >.>
...was such a little bitch back then. XD
November 16th, 2010, 10:05 pm
The scariest thing I ever played was Penumbra. I had to stop every few minutes to watch cat videos on Youtube to calm down. Also: Fast Zombies. I remember playing Ep2 in the Antlion caves and hearing that "Wooooaaauuuhhwoooo". I fell out of my chair.

For me that has to be like one of the first encounters with the little girl in FEAR. You're walking down a hallway and all of a sudden the door closes on you. You turn around and there's a little girl walking towards you. The next second there's blood on the ceiling...and she's walking on it. I fired so many bullets it wasn't even funny.
Another one that both freaked me out but made me go OMG THAT WAS SO COOL! was in Metal Gear Solid. Psycho Mantis is one of the most badass villains out there. Any man who can move a controller with his mind and know what games you play is a badass in my book.
Though the kings of scaring me have to be...the Halo 1 Marines. Most enemies do the same things to scare you...not these guys. They're unpredictable in their tactics. Whether it's throwing a grenade right under you or shooting a nearby lady bug in the warthog turret while a hunter just stares at you and laughs as it charges up its fuel rod gun.
Apparently I forgot to log in.

@ToonTom: No you don't use the thermal's to kill it, it's like you're playing fetch. You throw it, watch it go after it, when it's near it (you can tell by the billowing clouds of sand) you activate super speed and run like a mofo. Just don't rush through it, plan your routes and think about where you need to go. Remember, it can only get you on the wavy sand, there's some smooth sand by the destroyed ship and as far as I know it can't get you there or on rock or metal or anything else than wavy sand.
To answer your question.....

The only thing I'm scared of is.....cake.
Yes, I know. It's really stupid but yeah, I hate cake. Instead, I get chicken pie for mah birthday. :D Oh yeah, pie pie pie.....

Right now, Jockeys from Left 4 Dead 2 give me nightmares. Their maniac laugh gives me creeps

The invincible zombie thing in Dead Space freaked me out so bad that I never finished the game at all.
